Google Initiates Rollout of Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 for Pixel Devices

In a surprising move, Google is skipping QPR1 Beta 3 and jumping straight to Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 for Pixel phones, tablets, and the Fold. While QPR1 is slated for launch next month, Google is already propelling the next quarterly cycle, with QPR2 expected to reach stable status by March. The current build numbers are as follows:

- Pixel 5a devices: AP11.231020.013

- Pixel 8 and 8 Pro devices: AP11.231020.014

- All other devices: AP11.231020.013.A1

Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 introduces notable changes, as these Quarterly Platform Releases typically bring more significant updates compared to monthly bug fixes. These changes can encompass substantial UI tweaks and new features that don't necessitate waiting for the next major Android release. Despite being labeled as betas, QPRs are known for their relative stability and are officially deemed "suitable for general use." However, users may encounter the following issues:

Android Platform:

- Some apps using the meta-data element unconventionally may face installation issues.

- Occasionally, there is no haptic feedback when unlocking the device using fingerprint recognition.

- Pixel Fold devices might experience a situation where the inner display does not turn on after unfolding the device post-unlocking.

Google Apps:

- The Assistant At a Glance widget may display weather information for the wrong location.

Google has identified several fixes, likely from QPR1:

- Resolved a package manager crash issue during the installation of certain apps.

- Addressed an problem preventing users from submitting feedback through the Android Beta Feedback app.

- Fixed an issue that occasionally hindered device connection to a 5G network when available.

Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1, bundled with the November 2023 security patch, is available for various Pixel devices, including the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold, as well as the Android Emulator.

Users can choose to leave the beta program and receive the public stable release of Android 14 QPR1 without wiping their devices by opting out and not installing the QPR2 Beta 1 update. Opting out post-installation will result in data wipe, following the program guidelines. Those preferring the public release should disregard the QPR2 update and await the Android 14 QPR1 public release.

Installation methods include the Android Beta Program, flashing, or sideloading, with comprehensive guides available for assistance. Factory Images and OTAs are provided for Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, and Pixel 5a.
